“Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind” – Emerson
How does manhood relate to individuality?
This is a question that Ralph Waldo Emerson addresses in his famous 1841 essay Self Reliance.
In today’s study club we met to discuss this essay and it’s impact. Here are some powerful quotes from the essay that will help you contemplate the question at hand:
- “It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion, it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude”
- “Whoso would be a man must be a non-conformist”
- “Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of its members”
To Emerson, manhood is individuality. It is living a life from within, from a place of inventive initiative rather than conforming to the customs and trends of the world we live in, living for what we believe in and not what the world wants us to become. To Emerson, conformity is the death of man.
It is interesting to think about how different the social landscape of 1841 looks from the one we exist in now in 2025. We are daily manipulated and marketed to live a life of conformity that would be unimaginable to a man even just a few decades ago.
While the world’s information has become accessible to everyone, a great shadow has fallen over the spirit of free-thought as brilliantly contrived algorithms have mastered the methods of psychological & social engineering.
Brother, we must never hand over our minds blindly to external influences.
As Emerson says in the essay, “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind”.
In this spirit let us constantly question the world around us, think deeply about what principles we want to live by and why, and have the courage to live a life written by our own spirits and not the influences of society.
