Heroic
You and a guest/spouse are invited to a private screening of the new documentary on the making of America’s World War I Memorial, followed by a live interview with sculptor Sabin Howard and director Traci L. Slatton.
Give Everything
In 2016 a New York sculptor and his architect partner won the national competition to design the National World War I Memorial. His sculpture took nearly a decade.
Heroic, directed by Traci L. Slatton and drawn from more than 4,000 hours of footage, follows Sabin Howard from his Bronx studio to an English foundry as he shapes 38 figures, nearly sixty feet of bronze, against every artistic, bureaucratic and personal obstacle a public monument can raise.
It is a film about craft and endurance, and about a conviction older than the Republic: that beauty and the human form still have something to say about who we are.
Heroic
The Sculptor & the Filmmaker
Heroic is a husband-and-wife story: he made the monument, and she filmed every year of it. Both will join us Friday for a live interview after the film.
Traci L. Slatton
Slatton wrote and directed Heroic. A graduate of Yale and Columbia, she is a novelist, with books including Immortal and The Botticelli Affair, and a longtime writer on art and beauty.
She also managed Howard’s memorial project, which gave her a front-row seat to the years of work: more than 4,000 hours of footage across three continents.
Sabin Howard
The subject of Heroic and its producer. Howard is among America’s foremost figurative sculptors, working as the old masters did: from living models, with the human body as the subject.
In 2016 he and architect Joseph Weishaar won the design competition for the National World War I Memorial, chosen from more than 350 entries. His 38-figure bronze relief, A Soldier’s Journey, was unveiled in Washington in September 2024. He is now at work on the Grand Liberty Arch.
