How Do We Become Better Writers?
On Wednesday, Feb 19th, as the freshly fallen snow painted the Nashville streets a winter wonderland, Meriwether’s Study Club gathered at the W Hotel off of 12th avenue for our weekly meeting.
”How do we become better writers, and what makes a good writer?” was asked and the following was determined; a good writer is a clear writer.
There is no room for rambling in the world of good literature, if we hope to write well we must learn to write clear.
When we look back and analyze some of the greatest books ever written, we find that underlying all of them is a clarity and efficiency that leaves no line underdeveloped and no dead space sitting around.
To become a clear writer we must become clear thinkers, and to become clear thinkers is to master our own minds.
Without coincidence, it is this self-mastery that has been the universal gospel of sages since time immemorial.
Many who engage in a consistent writing practice will find the first challenge a daunting one; that of turning thoughts into words, the non-linear into the linear, the chaos into order. Writing is far more than jotting down some ideas or opinions. It is an exercise that, when done intentionally, exposes the deepest levels of our psyche.
The criticisms we may give ourselves after reviewing our work are not just about our writing, but give us a glimpse into how we show up in the world, what we may be holding back, where our strengths may lie.
Every word is an opportunity to learn.
This endeavor for self-mastery is fundamental at Meriwether. Through engaging our minds in new ways we break open our potential and experience rapid transformation.
You are also invited to join us in April as we bring these ideas to life in the beautiful Tennessee countryside during our 2 day/2 night Meriwether Men’s Retreat (April 25th – 27th). Click here to learn more about it.
